South Bay Mother Sues Doctors and Hospital for Loss of Arms and Legs

|

A South Bay mother of two has sued Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance for medical malpractice after a post-surgery infection resulted in the loss of her arms and legs.

The woman, 48-year-old Annette Ramirez, mother of a 6-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son, went into Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center for a hysterectomy. According to the lawsuit filed against the hospital and eight doctors, though doctors recorded the procedure as "without complication," Ramirez's colon was punctured during the surgery.

Over the next 48 hours, Ramirez developed signs of infection, including rapid heartbeat, low urine output and low blood pressure. According to the lawsuit, doctors ignored the signs of infection. Not until two days after the surgery was a CT scan ordered, which revealed the perforated bowel.

Gangrene set in. Despite a second surgery and treatment in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, doctors had to remove both legs above the ankle, her right arm above the elbow, and her left arm above the wrist.
