Long Beach Crash Kills 1, Injures 6

|

A Long Beach car accident involving a speeding SUV left one man dead and six people injured.

The accident happened on Saturday at 8:40 p.m. on Del Amo Blvd., east of Orange Ave. The driver of a 2002 Chevy Suburban was eastbound on Del Amo. According to the Long Beach Police Department, the driver, who was speeding, lost control and struck the center divider. His vehicle rolled several times and came to rest in eastbound lanes.

Four of the six male passengers were ejected from the SUV, including 29-year-old Long Beach resident Vernon Onofia. Onofia was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Two of the vehicle's passengers were trapped inside and had to be pulled out by personnel from the Long Beach Fire Department.

The SUV's driver and two passengers were hospitalized in critical but stable condition. The remaining passengers were treated and released.

Witnesses told the Long Beach Police Department that the SUV may have been racing with a four-door Infinity, possibly an Infinity G35, with tinted windows. The driver was a man in his mid-30's. After the crash, the driver of the Infinity initially stopped, but then drove westbound on Del Amo and northbound on Orange Ave.
